Huanghuai University

I have just returned from China having spent October and November teaching ‘Graphic Representation’ – a first year Fine Art module at Huanghuai university, Zhumadian in China. The module incorporated drawing, printmaking and photography topics and was delivered to a group   of 105 first year Fine Art students.

The module aimed to introduce fundamental principles of objective drawing through the analysis of form, line, tone, and mark-making, and to encourage competence and confidence in Drawing, Printmaking and photography. Through the delivery of practical’s, lectures, and group tutorials the module attempted to instil a knowledge of the cultural heritage of the mediums, and their continuing importance to contemporary art practice.

Having re-written much of the content for delivery at Huanghuai, I was able to include and test a number of theories originating from my research, which resulted in some very exciting and authentic responses from the students.

Teaching at Huanghuai was a fantastic experience and a real privilege, and one that has significantly informed my own research and practice.
